Healthy Kohl’s Kids: Healthy Eating and Fitness Education
Children’s Hospital & Medical Center and Kohl’s Department Stores have a partnership called Healthy Kohl’s Kids, a year-round program focused on educating children and families about healthy eating and fitness habits. Healthy Kohl’s Kids provides information and tools to help families make smart choices for healthy living.
Healthy Kohl’s Kids educates parents and children on proper nutrition and exercise, which will translate into a healthier community in the years to come with fewer children and adults suffering from preventable conditions such as obesity, diabetes and heart disease. The partnership provides educational opportunities to area families through this Healthy Kohl’s Kids website, school programs, special events and public service announcements.
Research shows that childhood obesity is a serious health issue facing many communities. In 2012, Children’s Hospital & Medical Center embarked on an Omaha-area research project called the Child & Adolescent Community Health Needs Assessment, which focused on Douglas and Sarpy counties in Nebraska and Pottawattamie County in Iowa. The health needs assessment included these findings:
- Obesity was identified as the top health issue affecting both children and adolescents in the Omaha metro area.
- Three out of 10 school-age children/adolescents in the metro area are overweight or obese.
- Obesity/nutrition was identified as one of the top five key health concerns for metro area children and adolescents.
